A 65-year-old SUV driver who police said fled the scene of a minor car accident last week in the Waipio Acres area and was then killed when he struck a parked vehicle about 2 miles away has been identified as Jimmie Dorsey Jr. of Mililani, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday.
Shortly before the fatal crash Thursday afternoon, police said, Dorsey’s sport utility vehicle had rear-ended a pickup truck on Kamehameha Highway near Higgins Road. Both vehicles initially pulled to the side of the road, but Dorsey then fled the scene in the SUV.
The pickup truck driver and another driver who witnessed the crash followed Dorsey, later reporting to police that the SUV was traveling at about 70 mph in an area with a 35 mph speed limit, police said.
Dorsey, who was not wearing a seat belt, drove into a coned area at the highway’s intersection with Waikalani Drive and struck the parked GP Roadway Solutions truck. A worker seated in the truck’s flatbed suffered severe leg injuries and was transported in critical condition to a hospital.
The worker, a man in his 30s, is undergoing treatment, HPD spokeswoman Sarah Yoro said.
Dorsey died at the scene. There were no passengers in the SUV.
The Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death was blunt force injuries to the torso, and the manner of death was accidental.
Police say all other factors, including why Dorsey fled the scene of the first accident, remain under investigation.
