Kapolei’s Alanis Sakuma ran away with medalist honors in the Girls 15-18 division and will represent Hawaii next month at the Adams Golf Championship, in East Lansing, Mich.
Sakuma shot 6-under-par 67 at Turtle Bay’s Fazio Course on Thursday to win by six. Zoe-Ann Yamamoto, who tied for third at 77, accepted the girls’ second invitation to the national event.
Moanalua seniors Kyosuke Hara (65) and Shawn Lu (66) finished at the top of the boys’ oldest division, but could not make the trip. Third-place Sian Rogers (67) will go, along with Justin Williamson (68).
The younger divisions do not advance to nationals. Winners were Jennifer Koga (74) and Jordan Terada (75) in the 13-14 divisions and Karissa Pi`ilani Kilby (75) and Jake David Sequin (76) in 11-12s.
The HSJGA also held a qualifier Saturday for the Optimist International Junior Championship, with 18 kids advancing. The championship will be at PGA National Resort and Spa in Florida July 16-21.
Oda ousted in second round at British Amateur
Moanalua alum John Oda fell to Paul Barjon of France, 6 and 5, in the second round of match play at the 120th British Amateur last Thursday in Scotland.
Oda won just won hole — No. 2 — at Carnoustie and lost five of the last six.
Oda is a two-time state high school champion about to enter his sophomore year at UNLV. He plays the 22nd Sahalee Players Championship next, later this month in Sammamish, Wash.
Baldwin graduate Justin Kelley, who won the John Burns Intercollegiate his senior year (2014) at Brigham Young, is also in the field as is `Iolani grad Lorens Chan, a junior at UCLA.
