Ocean enthusiasts rescued a man who almost drowned Sunday morning at Sharks Cove on the North Shore.
The man was scuba diving when he ran into trouble around 10 a.m. Bystanders pulled him out of the water and performed CPR, said Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.
The patient, a local man between his 20s and 30s, was transported in critical condition to a hospital.
Maui officer in trouble again, in California
A Maui police officer on administrative leave following an arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant was arrested Saturday in California for allegedly being drunk in public.
John Solomon, 39, of Pukalani was arrested around 4:36 p.m. Hawaii time by the Newport Beach Police Department. His bail was set at $500.
No details of the incident were released.
Solomon, a three-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, has been on administrative leave since his June 11 arrest on Maui.
Kapolei brush fire closes H-1 freeway
A small brush fire in Kapolei closed a portion of the H-1 freeway Sunday morning.
Honolulu police shut down two town-bound lanes of the freeway at 9:45 a.m. near the North-South Road offramp. The lanes were reopened around 12:45 p.m.
Photos posted to social media sites showed heavy smoke and flames along the edge of the highway. Traffic cameras showed eastbound traffic backing up past the Campbell Industrial Park exit.
