Record high temperatures for July 1 were set Wednesday on Kauai and Maui.

The mercury reached 89 degrees in Lihue, the National Weather Service said. That broke the earlier record of 87 degrees, set in 1982.

It also tied the warmest day for July, reached on July 12, 1979, and July 7, 1981.

Also, Kahului saw the temperature reach 92 degrees. That broke the old record of 91, set in 1980.

In Hilo Tuesday, the high of 88 degrees tied the record for the date, set in 1980.

Sunday’s temperature of 88 in Hilo also set a record for that date, topping the earlier mark of 87 set in 1980. Kahului’s record of 92 was also tied Sunday.

New waterline to be installed

KILAUEA, Kauai >> A construction project to replace Kolo Road’s waterline is being launched as part of a long-term plan to address necessary upgrades to Kauai’s aging and deteriorating infrastructure.

The Garden Island newspaper reports the Department of Water announced the $900,000 Kolo Road Main Replacement project will begin Monday.

The state-funded project will include 1,300 feet of pipe and will add a new waterline in Kilauea.

Department spokeswoman Kim Tamaoka says some residents will experience water shortages by the end of the project. She says all affected residents will be notified when a water shutdown is scheduled.

The project will also include installation of new valves, hydrants and meter boxes, along with pavement resurfacing and restoration.

The project is expected to be completed by January.
