City Hall lights to mark holiday after touting gay marriage

Honolulu Hale has been illuminated in the colors of the rainbow this week to mark the U.S. Supreme Court ruling recognizing same-sex marriage.

The colored lights, displayed nightly since Tuesday, will be changed to red, white and blue Friday night in celebration of the Fourth of July.

It was a “historic week for our nation,” said Mayor Kirk Caldwell in a news release. “The Supreme Court’s decisions on Obamacare and marriage equality make this upcoming Independence Day a special celebration. We’re lighting up Honolulu Hale in support of our great nation, which got even better with these landmark decisions.”

Gay and lesbian couples were granted the right to marry by the Supreme Court on Friday in a historic ruling. The decision touched off celebrations around the country, including rainbow lights that shined on the White House. The court last week also upheld the nationwide tax subsidies underpinning President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, rejecting a major challenge to the landmark law in a ruling that preserves health insurance for millions of Americans.

The exterior of Honolulu Hale will be lit for Independence Day each night through Sunday.
