Diver’s body discovered off Punaluu Bay

The Hawaii Fire Department recovered the body of a missing 57-year-old Hawaii island diver Thursday afternoon at Punaluu Bay in Kau.

The body was found floating in front of the Punaluu Pavilions, about 150 yards offshore.

The fire helicopter lowered a rescue specialist, who retrieved the body at 5:20 p.m. and brought it to shore using a net, the Fire Department said in a news release.

The Coast Guard and Fire Department had been searching for the free diver near Punaluu.

The Coast Guard identified the diver as Robert Furtado.

His dive partner reported him missing at 5:30 a.m. about 200 yards southeast of the Punaluu Boat Ramp. The Fire Department got the call at 8:12 a.m., and the first unit was on scene at 8:25 a.m.

Fire Department divers found his spear and dive buoy about 50 to 100 yards offshore.

Male-female pair sought in theft of truck

Hawaii County police are looking for a man and a woman who robbed a 32-year-old Volcano man in Kurtistown and stole his pickup truck Wednesday.

Police said the Volcano man was parked on the side of the road when a large white Chevrolet pickup truck pulled up behind the victim’s truck shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday. A female passenger in the Chevy got out and struck up a conversation with the victim. She then jumped into the driver’s side seat of his truck and allegedly threatened him with a knife, police said.

The Chevy’s driver allegedly threatened the victim with a garden tool, police said.

The stolen truck is a beige 1987 Toyota single-cab pickup, with license plate NGB 002 and a black bumper with a winch. The male suspect is described as about 6 feet 3 inches to 6 feet 4 inches tall. The woman has curly, shoulder-length hair, police said.
