HILO » Peter Cabreros is the new warden of the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo.
The Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday the promotion of Cabreros, who has been acting warden since the retirement of the previous warden, Pete McDonald, in January.
Cabreros began serving as a corrections officer at HCCC in February 1975 and worked his way up to chief of security in 2002.
Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda said in a Tuesday news release, “Peter is a valuable asset to the department and is a committed corrections professional. He brings many years of corrections experience with him to this new position and I have no doubt HCCC will benefit by his leadership.”
County strayed from hiring law, audit discovers
LIHUE » An audit of the Kauai County Department of Human Resources found flaws within the agency’s hiring practices.
The Garden Island newspaper reported Thursday that an independent firm conducted the performance audit based on the county’s personnel procedures from 2009 to 2013.
The audit found that the county didn’t consistently adhere to state law or its own policies when hiring. The county also failed to consistently maintain necessary documentation and created situations in which the merit-based hiring system could have been undermined.
Council Chairman Mel Rapozo said Wednesday that some of the report’s findings were “an embarrassment.”
Human Resources Director Janine Rapozo said the audit spanned the period when the department made the switch to centralize its functions.
Officials from the mayor’s administration have agreed to make the recommendations included in the report.
