A 70-year-old man was in serious condition Monday after setting off a five-vehicle crash on the H-2 freeway, police said.
Two women, ages 44 and 29, were seriously injured in the crash, city Emergency Medical Services reported.
Three others — a 51-year-old man, a 43-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman — were treated at the scene but declined transport to a hospital, EMS said.
Police said the crash occurred at about 7:17 a.m. in the southbound lane of the H-2 near the Meheula Parkway overpass.
The first vehicle, driven by the 70-year-old, crossed over the center median into oncoming traffic, then hit a second vehicle, which was pushed into a third, police said.
The first vehicle continued on and struck a fourth vehicle head-on, pushing that vehicle into a fifth one, Vehicular Homicide Section Sgt. Michael Brady Jr. said.
Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, Brady said.
Police have recovered the first vehicle as evidence. The driver was initially in critical condition but later improved.
