The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday that the body found by Boy Scouts along the Kuliouou Ridge Trail on Saturday was that of a 35-year-old Mililani man.
He was identified as Daniel Koren.
Koren died from a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was suicide, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Jeff Sulzbach, chief executive officer of the Boy Scouts’ Aloha Council, said a group of 12 Scouts with Troop 42 were camping just below the summit with some adults.
Three of the Scouts were hiking with a parent when they made the discovery, Sulzbach said. (Boy Scouts range in age from 11 to 17. Sulzbach did not know the specific ages of those in the group.)
The body was found along the upper slopes of Kuliouou Ridge Trail early Saturday evening, a Honolulu Fire Department official said.
Troop 42 is associated with Sacred Heart Church and Maryknoll School.
