Police questioned the driver of a car that hit and critically injured a man walking in Pearl City on Wednesday morning.
Police said the incident occurred at 5:40 a.m., when a 24-year-old woman, driving makai, hit a 25-year-old man in the 400 block of Hoomalu Street. The impact shattered the front windshield of the silver Corolla.
Police have opened a first-degree negligent injury case, which is pending investigation, police spokeswoman Sarah Yoro said.
Paramedics took the man in critical condition to a hospital.
He suffered head and internal injuries, police said.
Police did not know whether the pedestrian was trying to cross Hoomalu Street or was just walking on the two-lane road, which has no sidewalks.
There is no crosswalk near the accident scene.
It was dark and rainy at the time of the accident, Yoro added.
However, Jenalyn Cadiz, whose cousin owns a Hoomalu Street care home fronting the accident scene, said that "people speed here a lot," adding, "It’s scary.
Parked cars on both sides of Hoomalu Street have been hit by speeding motorists, she said.
"A co-worker just had her car hit while it was parked here," said Cadiz.
The speed limit is 25 mph.
Neighbors said Hoomalu Street is infamous for speeding. Over the years, police and community leaders have held sign-waving campaigns to slow down cars, and police have ticketed motorists for speeding, seat belt violations and cellphone use.
But police have not determined whether excessive speed was a factor in Wednesday’s accident.
