HILO » A 55-year-old Waimea woman has pleaded no contest to embezzling almost $100,000 from the Big Island Pop Warner Football Conference.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Thursday that Greta "Pua" Correa entered her plea to first-degree theft July 7. She is scheduled to be sentenced July 21.
Prosecutors say Correa stole the money between 2009 and 2012. The former league treasurer forged the signature of then-league President Charles Nahale on league travel fund checks.
Former President of the Puna Panthers team Keven Lee says a $108 check bounced in 2012 from a travel account that should have contained more than $100,000. He alerted league officials after the bounced check.
3 are honored for community service in Puna
A region of Hawaii island hit by lava and a hurricane is recognizing three members of the Puna community for their service.
The Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset this month conferred its Service to Community award on two people and one organization.
Some provided relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Iselle and when lava inched toward people’s homes in Pahoa.
Chef Lyndon Honda is among the recipients. Honda rallied chefs from Maui and Hawaii island for fundraisers, donating 100 percent of proceeds to farmers in Puna and those affected by the lava flow and hurricane, according to a news release.
Another recipient, Catherine Ford, is known for waking up before 5 a.m. to help Pahoa’s homeless, giving rides to those without transportation so they can get food and medications, according to the release.
The Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset also honored the Kalani Honua organization. According to the release, Kalani Honua spent about $89,000 to provide food, ice and water in the aftermath of Hurricane Iselle, when many were without power and refrigeration.
