A 42-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday following a near drowning off Kalama Beach Park in Kailua.
An Emergency Medical Services report said the man experienced difficulty in the ocean, prompting an emergency call at 3:36 p.m.
The man was taken by paramedics to an area hospital.
Brush fire on Garden Isle flares anew
A brush fire that diverted flights from Lihue Airport flared up again early Sunday, the Kauai Fire Department said.
Engine 3 and a battalion chief responded to a flare-up at 3 a.m., doused the flames and saturated the area with water.
At about 8:44 a.m. more fire crews and personnel from the Kauai County Department of Public Works returned to the scene. The public works crew used a bulldozer and a front-end loader to move the debris around while the firefighters thoroughly soaked the exposed areas.
They left the scene at approximately 11:44 a.m., but there was another flare-up at 2:26 p.m. and yet another a couple of hours later, the county said.
About 40 acres was blackened.
The cause of the fire, which broke out at 8:21 a.m. Saturday, was undetermined. But it put enough smoke in the area to prompt controllers to divert at least three flights.
Bus rider arrested in assault on driver
A 45-year-old man assaulted a city bus driver Saturday after becoming upset about missing his stop in Kunia, police said.
The man approached the driver after missing his stop at about 6:15 p.m. and yelled at the driver while the bus was in motion, police said.
When the driver stopped the bus, the rider assaulted the 49-year-old driver, police said.
The suspect, a Kunia man, was arrested at the intersection of Kupuna Loop and Kupuohi Street on suspicion of interference with the operator of a public transit vehicle, a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The man remained in custody Sunday awaiting charges.
Owner spots his stolen car and calls 911
Two men inside a stolen vehicle were arrested at Sandy Beach on Saturday after the owner spotted his vehicle on the roadway and called police.
The owner, a 31-year-old man, reported his vehicle was stolen from his home Saturday, then later that day saw his vehicle pass him on the roadway and began following it while calling 911, police said.
Police located the stolen vehicle and arrested the driver and a passenger at about 7:30 p.m.
The driver, 18, was booked on suspicion of operating a stolen vehicle. The passenger, 28, was arrested for investigation of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. Both remained in custody Sunday.
Man is stabbed at Old Stadium Park
A 22-year-old man was in serious condition Saturday evening after being stabbed multiple times at the Old Stadium Park in Moiliili.
The incident was reported at 5:51 p.m.
An Emergency Medical Services report indicated the man suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper torso and back.
He was taken to a local trauma center.
