The 87-year-old woman killed when a car driven by her 11-year-old grandson knocked her to the ground was identified Monday as Sueno Saito of Haiku. Determination of the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
Maui police said the incident occurred at 12:48 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center at 665 Kahului Beach Road in Kahului.
The boy was behind the wheel of a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant four-door sedan when it backed out of a parking stall. The driver’s-side door struck Saito. The vehicle then struck a 2006 Honda Element stopped behind the Galant. An ambulance took Saito to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in critical condition. She died Sunday. This is Maui County’s 13th fatality for 2015, compared with 14 at this same time last year.
Cow shuts down Farrington Highway traffic
Honolulu police have stopped traffic along Farrington Highway near Ko Olina as they attempt to get control of another runaway cow.
This is the second time in less than a week that a loose cow has disrupted traffic along the highway. On July 16, police shot and killed a cow that wandered onto the highway and displayed aggressive behavior.
Monday’s incident was first reported around 9:30 p.m.
According to police, officers on the scene are holding back traffic in an effort to get the cow safely off the road.
