After all the Hayashis and all but one former champion had been ousted, the Aloha Section PGA hosted a Rainbow Reunion in Wednesday’s final of the Nike Golf Four-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Between college golf memories, Jared Sawada, University of Hawaii Class of 2012, and Cory Oride (’13) outlasted Nainoa Calip (’14) and UH assistant coach Shawn McCauley, 3 and 2.

McCauley, who won this title twice with TJ Kua — another former Rainbow — was the oldest of the foursome by seven years. He said Sawada and Oride, both heading to Japan soon to try and qualify for the pro tour, made his 32 years like much more.

It was not that bad.

Sawada and Oride led immediately after Oride gunned in birdie putts on the first two holes, but they never broke away.

McCauley’s birdie on the third cut the deficit in half. Oride’s third birdie two holes later made it 2-up again.

It stayed there until Calip drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the 11th. That came after he had missed a 4-footer on the previous green.

“If I made that putt on 10, then making the putt on 11 would have squared it,” said Calip, who was runner-up in the 2014 Big West Championship. “It would have been different, I think.”

Everybody bogeyed the devious 12th — Sawada driving into the hazard and the others looking on in dismay as approach shots hit the green and rolled back down the hill.

Sawada, who won the 105th Manoa Cup at OCC two years ago, blasted his second shot on the par-5 13th into the breeze and straight up Nuuanu Valley. It stopped 15 feet left of the hole and by the time he got to putt everyone else was at par or worse.

Sawada swiftly hit a lag putt and, the moment it stopped, tapped it in for a birdie that put his team 2-up again.

He and Calip, who last year became the seventh UH golfer to win the Manoa Cup since 2001, both birdied the next hole. Then Sawada was the last man standing for birdie again at the 15th. Another easy two-putt dormied the match.

“Once you get to know this course you can make a lot of birdies,” McCauley said. “This tournament is not won with pars. It’s won with birdies and eagles.”

Pars from each team ended it on the 16th.

Sawada and Oride, who got his first win as a professional, each collected $1,500. Calip and McCauley each got $1,000.

Two years ago McCauley went into the insurance business and he is now an OCC member. “It’s awesome,” he says of working for Pyramid Insurance. “Pays a lot more than being a golf pro.”

That’s not to say he wants the guys he used to coach at UH to give up now.

“Their games have come a long way,” McCauley says. “It’s good to see them practicing and playing. They just need to keep playing, figure out how to go out there and play tournaments and learn. You guys have got the game.”

Sawada and Oride beat defending champions Kevin Hayashi and Kevin Carll, 3 and 2, in one semifinal. Calip and McCauley took out Kyle Hayashi and Ryan Acosta, 4 and 2.

Hayashi-Acosta went 19 holes in the quarterfinals to eliminate seven-time champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield.
