Learn which plants can stand up to the summer heat and how you can conserve water in your garden via landscaping, at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden Open House and Plant Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The event includes a sale of plants from more than 10 local nurseries and growers, and workshops and classes on xeriscape plant crafts and native plant propagation. Garden tours, free native Hawaiian tree packets and bag-your-own-mulch stations will also be available.
Proceeds support the garden’s educational programs. The garden is at is 99-1268 Iwaena St.; free shuttle is available. Call 748-5041.

Mahimahi Dragon Fruit Pineapple Bake

» 4 6-ounce mahimahi fillets
» Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
» 1 teaspoon lime zest
» 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
» 1 (8-ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
» 1 medium dragon fruit, cut in half lengthwise, peeled and chopped into small cubes
» 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Season both sides of fillet with salt, pepper and lime zest, lightly pressing into fillet. Place on baking sheet, and place sheet in center rack of oven. Bake 18 to 20 minutes, or until fish is cooked.
While fish is baking, in medium bowl, combine lime juice, pineapple, dragon fruit and cilantro.
During final 5 minutes of cooking, top fish with fruit mixture and return to oven. Topping also can be used as a garnish. Serves 4.

Dragon Fruit Smoothie

» 1/2 cup dragon fruit, peeled and chopped
» 1 small banana, peeled and frozen
» 6 ounces water, or soy or almond milk
» 1 handful ice cubes
In blender, combine all ingredients and blend to desired consistency.
Add other fruits if desired. Freeze dragon fruit for thicker consistency. Serves 1.
