With the high cost of getting kids ready to go back to school in mind, Remington College is giving families a break by offering free haircuts in August through its Cuts for Kids promotion.
Beginning Monday through Aug. 31, free haircuts will be provided to kids, age 17 and younger, at 1132 Bishop St., Suite 550, by students and instructors in the Remington College’s Cosmetology Diploma program.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except Wednesdays, when hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call the Paul Brown Institute at Remington College at 587-8448 to make an appointment.
Walk-ins are welcome.
During Cuts for Kids, Remington College also will be collecting school supplies that will go to local schools. Anyone who brings in a donation will receive a free haircut, manicure or pedicure.
Allison Izu basics for sale at Cut Collective
In the "must be nice" department, when designer Allison Izu started dreaming about taking a vacation, and with airline luggage weight rules in mind, she created a mix-and-match set of easy basics that can go from day to night while on the road, and back to work when the time comes.
Luckily, for those of us who can’t come up with our own capsule collections, she’s making her Cooke Street straight pant (a comfy but dressier alternative to tights, $118), Cali Street pencil skirt ($54) and Cassie jacket (a chic, contemporary take on the Japanese hapi coat, $98), available to all.
Styles are offered in basic black, charcoal gray and wisteria blue, with an additional black-and-white stripe option for the skirt. Just add your own tank or tee. I’m sure you have plenty of those that will work with these colors.
Shop Allison Izu designs at the Cut Collective headquarters at the Manoa Innovation Center, 2800 Woodlawn Drive, Suite 160, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays or by appointment. Call 497-8400.

Isle Neiman Marcus gets preview of treatment for sun-damaged skin
For decades, prescription retinoids such as Retin-A, Renova and Tazorac that contain the vitamin A derivative have been dermatologists’ go-to products to address skin damage. The downside is acid in the formulations that can cause itching, inflammation and dryness.
A spate of new products incorporate retinol that’s been reformulated to be gentler on skin while maintaining the power of vitamin A.
The newest is Natura Bisse’s Essential Shock Intense Retinol Fluid ($105 for 1.7 fluid ounces) that offers a daily boost of vitamins and hydration. Due to high demand because of the incidence of sun-damaged skin here, Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Center was the first to receive shipments this month, before its official August rollout.
