A man arrested in Hawaii for allegedly trying to buy military-grade night vision goggles is being sent to Utah.
A federal judge in Honolulu on Thursday ordered Song Il Kim to be sent to Utah, where he was indicted. The case began in Utah when undercover federal agents communicated with Kim, who wanted to buy six sets of goggles for a total of $22,000. Kim was arrested after meeting with an undercover agent in Honolulu.
According to court documents, Kim was born in North Korea, holds a Cambodian passport and lives in China. Authorities say he wanted to export the goggles to China, which is illegal. The specific devices Kim allegedly wanted are made for the U.S. military and its allies.
Utah defense attorney Scott Williams says he’s trying to expedite Kim’s transfer.
State revising parking at Maalaea harbor
The state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation will implement a new parking plan and fees at the Maalaea Small Boat Harbor on Maui beginning Monday.
State vendor Diamond Parking will install parking meters and collect fees of 50 cents per hour or $12 for 24 hours for parking stalls at the harbor, according to a state Department of Land and Natural Resources news release Thursday.
The facility will have 208 regular parking stalls, seven or eight boat trailer parking stalls and four handicapped parking stalls available for users, according the release. The final count on the available stalls is pending finalization of the configuration plan.
The Maalaea Small Boat Harbor has undergone improvements that include a new ferry building with attached DOBOR district office, new piers, loading docks and parking areas. The total cost of the new improvements was about $15 million.
This parking concession is similar to the parking concession at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor on Oahu. The average monthly parking revenue at the Ala Wai harbor is $62,500, the release said.
