Punahou’s Mariel Galdiano won the Canadian Women’s Amateur on Friday, closing with a 3-under 69 for a one-stroke victory over Bethany Wu in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The 17-year-old Galdiano, the three-time state high school champion, parred the final hole at Riverside Country Club, while playing partner Wu made a bogey. Galdiano, who will be a senior at Punahou, finished at 5-under 283 and the UCLA recruit earned spots in the Canadian Women’s Open and U.S. Women’s Amateur.
The 18-year-old Wu, from Diamond Bar, Calif., closed with a 70. Minnesota’s Sarah Burnham, Lauren Greenlief of Virginia and Peru’s Lucia Gutierrez tied for third at 1 under.
Six Seasiders hoopsters honored
Six Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball players were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court on Thursday.
Departed seniors Luke Aston and Robbie Mitchell and incoming seniors Willie Ching, BJ Ford, Scott Friel and Ian Harward were honored. The six selections were tops among PacWest schools.
The NABC Honors Court recognizes men’s collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season.
Cortez selected for Nike soccer camp
Maui High’s Chai Cortez was chosen for this week’s Nike National Training Camp, one of 16 players on the id2 National Selection picked based on performances in regional camps.
The incoming sophomore midfielder for the Sabers has orally committed to Oregon. She currently is playing for San Juan (Calif.) SC, part of the Elite Clubs’ National League. The camp runs through Saturday in Beaverton, Ore.
McGown joins Vulcans volleyball staff
AVCA Hall of Fame coach Carl McGown, whose coaching resume includes Church College of Hawaii, Hawaii, Brigham Young and the U.S. national men’s teams, has joined the Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball staff as an assistant to Tino Reyes.
Over the past 47 years, McGown has been part of 11 national championship teams and was a seven-time All-American as a player. Also the athletic director at Church College of Hawaii — now Brigham Young-Hawaii —he coached the Seasiders men’s team to a second-place finish in the USVBA Collegiate Championships in 1968. McGown also coached the BYU men to two NCAA titles, and was head coach of the U.S. men’s national team (1973-76) and was technical advisor for the U.S. in seven Olympic Games.
He was a volunteer assistant for the Rainbow Warriors under Mike Wilton for several seasons and served in the same capacity at BYU for his son Chris, the Cougars head coach who resigned in May.
