Maui fire burns half-acre near King Kekaulike
Maui firefighters extinguished a brush fire that burned an estimated half-acre of pasture grass near King Kekaulike High School in Makawao early Friday evening.
The fire was first reported around 5:35 p.m. on Haleakala Highway just mauka of the school. The fire was contained by 6 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
Meanwhile, Maui fire investigators were unable to determine the cause of two brush fires that burned what are believed to have been homeless encampments in West Maui on Thursday.
The fires were reported minutes apart. Fire officials said the area — the Kahoma Stream gulch next to North Hakau Place and North Hopoe Place — is frequented by homeless people who establish makeshift shelters in the brush.
No injuries were reported.
The only damage reported was to a property fence.
