Work begins Monday on a $7.9 million repair project on the Karsten Thot Bridge in Wahiawa, the state Department of Transportation announced in a news release.
The project might require lane closures or even the full closure of the Kamehameha Highway bridge between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. until the project is completed in April.
The project is expected to prolong the life of the bridge and improve safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.
The steel truss bridge was last repaired in 2012. This project will repair corroded structural steel, walkways and guard railings. The bridge will also be repainted.
Work during the day — from about 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. — will not require lane closures. During work hours the height clearance for the bridge will be lowered to 12 feet from 14 feet 4 inches, until approximately the end of the year.
For more information, motorists can visit the project website at www.rrkarstenthot.com or call the project hotline at 518-4576. Lane closure information will also be available on the HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov and released through the DOT’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
