Hawaii County police identified a man who was killed in an early Monday morning two-vehicle crash as Robert N. Weinstock, 52, of Kailua-Kona.
Weinstock was driving a 2003 Nissan sport utility vehicle when a green 2007 Ford pickup truck traveling west on Kaiminani Drive crossed the centerline before the Laui Street intersection and crashed head-on into the Nissan. Police were called to the scene at 12:41 a.m.
Both drivers were taken to Kona Community Hospital, where Weinstock was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m.
The pickup truck driver, a 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending further investigation.
Police have opened a negligent-homicide investigation.
The collision marked the 14th Big Island traffic fatality this year compared with eight at the same time last year.
Molokai dump to close early for lack of staff
The Molokai Landfill will close an hour and a half earlier Tuesday through Saturday due to inadequate staffing, the Maui County Solid Waste Division said in a news release Monday.
The landfill will close at 1 p.m.; normal closing time is 2:30 p.m.
Maui County officials said the landfill closures are needed to ensure safe operations and meet the minimum state Department of Health operating requirements.
Officials said they expect to reduce the number of early closures because the administration will be filling an equipment operator position approved by the County Council.
