Mariel Galdiano opened the 40th Junior PGA Championship with a 1-under-par 70 on Monday in Bryan, Texas, and the Punahou senior enters the second round tied for seventh.
Galdiano birdied four of her first five holes at Miramont Country Club and shot 31 on the front nine. She played the back nine at 3 over and ended the round six shots behind leader Yujeong Son of Oklahoma. Kaiser sophomore Malia Nam shot a 3-over 74 and is tied for 23rd in the four-day tournament.
In the boys championship, Moanalua senior Kyosuke Hara shot 3 over and is tied for 38th. Philip Barbaree of Louisiana shot a 5-under 66 to take the first-round lead.
Hawaii athletes win 9 medals
Three Hawaii athletes combined to win nine medals at the Special Olympics World Games, which concluded Sunday at Los Angeles.
Isaiah Wong of Kailua-Kona won three medals in powerlifting. He took home gold medals in the combination all lifts category (492.5 kg) and dead lift (205) and silvers in the bench press (107.50) and squat lift (180.0).
Kaneohe’s Ikaika Morita Sunada won silver in the 200-meter breaststroke (3:41.90) and 4×100 medley relay (6:45.66) and a bronze in the 100 breaststroke (1:41.76).
Chaunci Cummings of Kapaa won a silver in the 100-meter dash (23.14) and a bronze in the 4×100 relay (1:39.45).
