The developer of the Symphony Honolulu condominium tower in Kakaako will have to wait at least a week to find out whether a state board will let it keep the glass windows on the partially built building at the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard.

The board of the Hawaii Community Development Authority deferred a decision Wednesday on developer OliverMcMillan’s request for HCDA to waive a rule that specifies light transmission levels for glass on Kakaako towers.

Oliver McMillan argued at public hearings last month that it could not build the tower and meet the glass rule and a separate HCDA requirement that buildings achieve a certain level of energy efficiency. HCDA’s staff disagreed with the developer but agreed that the glass rule may need to be modified to achieve a better balance between reflectiveness and energy use.

A meeting for a board decision is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at HCDA’s office boardroom at 547 Queen St.
