Lost dive float prompts Coast Guard search
The Coast Guard is searching for the user of a dive float reported adrift Wednesday between Lanai and Maui.
A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point is searching the area for any signs of divers or distress.
Honolulu Command Center officials received a report from a good Samaritan of a drifting red-and-white dive flag and float with 4 feet of line attached to it about 2 miles east of Club Lanai in the Au Au channel between Lanai and Maui. The report came in at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday.
The officials issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and diverted the Dolphin helicopter crew from another mission to conduct a search of the area.
No boats or signs of distress have been sighted.
In a news release, Charles Turner, the command duty officer at Sector Honolulu, said: “Our primary concern is the safety of people on and around the water, especially with storm surge, high surf and swells from approaching Tropical Storm Guillermo.”
Anyone with information about the float is asked to call the command center at 842-2600.
