Hundreds came to greet Earl Finch when he came to Hawaii in 1946. A 100-car motorcade took him to a hero’s welcome at Iolani Palace and City Hall, where he was given a key to the city.

When Finch returned to Hawaii from a 30-day goodwill trip to Japan, he brought back a bag of cherry seeds to be presented to the children of Hawaii from the children of Japan in the hope that blossoms would some day signify the close friendship between the two places. At Honolulu Airport, Finch, wearing lei, was met by Mr. and Mrs. Tucker Gratz, left and center, and a group of 442nd Regimental Combat Team veterans: Akira “Sunshine” Fukunaga, George Miki and Ralph Yempuku.
