Representing Hawaii at the Little League West Regional, Waipio fell 16-9 to Southern California representative Sweetwater Valley from Bonita on Sunday at Houghton Stadium in San Bernandino, Calif.
Sage-Manuel Koahou, Hunter Sasaki and Vincent Ogasawara had two hits apiece. Ogasawara drove in three runs, while Charles Winchester plated two. After giving up six runs in the top of the first inning to Southern California, Hawaii responded with seven runs. Southern California would take the lead for good after a five-run second inning.
Waipio falls into a Tuesday elimination game against the loser of Monday’s Utah/Arizona opening-round game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
Saffery, Suzumoto place seventh on beach
Matthew Saffery and Shea Suzumoto took third place in the Silver division (seventh place overall) at the 2015 USA High Performance Beach Volleyball Tournament in Santa Monica, Calif.
Both incoming freshmen, Saffery (Kamehameha) and Suzumoto (Punahou) represented Hawaii under the Aloha Region Juniors HP Beach Team. Some 17 teams competed in the U17 Boys division.
