Sierra Club of Hawaii said it wants NextEra Energy Inc. to withdraw its proposal to buy Hawaiian Electric Industries for $4.3 billion.
The Sierra Club’s opposition follows the promised $1 billion savings over five years that the company offered Tuesday.
“It is not credible to exponentially increase the projected savings of this proposal from $60 million over four years to $1 billion over five years. The facts just aren’t there,” Marti Townsend, director of the Sierra Club of Hawaii, said Wednesday. “The Consumer Advocate’s filing, by contrast, makes clear there is no evidence a NextEra takeover would save Hawaii residents much money at all.”
Gov. David Ige said in July he was opposed to the sale.
The state Consumer Advocate, the state Energy Office and the state Office of Planning have all opposed the sale as the proposal currently stands.
