Kailua’s Malia Nam and Pearl City’s Mariel Galdiano won in Wednesday’s opening round of match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Portland, Ore.
Nam eliminated Rong Ji of Santa Fe, Calif., 2 up. Galdiano defeated Kimberly Mitchell of Woodbridge, Va., 7 and 5.
Nam, the OIA champion from Kaiser, will face Lydia Choi in Thursday’s round of 32. Galdiano, a Punahou senior and three-time state champion, faces Mika Liu. The round of 16 will also be held Thursday.
Waipio advances to semifinal
Waipio routed Paseo Verde of Nevada 14-3 on Wednesday to remain alive at the Little League Baseball Western Regional in San Bernardino, Calif.
Charles Winchester had three hits and five RBIs in the win. Winchester also struck out four batters in two innings of work. Vance Oshiro added three hits and three RBIs for Waipio, which scored 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Waipio advances to Friday’s semifinal against the loser of Thursday’s Utah-Southern California game. Friday’s game will be shown on ESPN at 3 p.m. Hawaii time. Thursday’s and Friday’s winners will meet in Saturday’s championship.
OIA looking for softball umpires
Umpires are being sought for the upcoming OIA junior varsity softball season, which starts in September.

HPU basketball adds 2
The Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team added two players to its roster.
Joel Feigler is transferring to HPU from Division I Central Arkansas and will have one year of eligibility remaining. Tyba Murphy of Australia will enter HPU as a freshman. The two are part of seven recruits for the upcoming season.
