It’s certainly good to see the worthy concepts of reuse and recycle applied wherever they make sense, as they do in this case.

Ten portable classroom structures that the state Department of Education had leased last year for emergency lava evacuation for Keonepoko Elementary School on Hawaii island will now be repurposed. Two will go to Kealakehe High to be used during its science building renovation, and the remaining eight will go to Oahu’s Campbell High School, which is now overcrowded. The big bonus is that the structures are air-conditioned, which is sorely needed since classroom temperatures routinely rise into the mid-90s.

The units, to be ready for use in January, cost the DOE $1.6 million to buy and relocate. On behalf of students and faculty at Kealakehe and Campbell: Good move, DOE.
