Paddleboarders rescued off Maui
Maui firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued a visiting Connecticut couple who got into trouble Wednesday while paddleboarding in the Kahana area of West Maui.
Officials said that at 11:19 a.m. Wednesday the Maui Fire Department got a call that two stand-up paddleboarders were possibly in distress. Nearby fisherman watched the paddleboarders struggle for 30 minutes to get back to shore, but when the paddleboarders failed to make progress, one of the fishermen called for help.
Firefighters got to the area, commonly called “S-Turns,” and saw the pair about 250 yards offshore.
Ocean Safety officers used rescue watercraft and brought the man and woman back to shore. Neither was injured.
