Three Farrington quarterbacks combined for 254 yards and five touchdowns as the No. 6 Governors air-raided Waipahu 46-6 at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night.
Bishop Rapoza started the game at QB for Farrington and threw two first-half touchdown passes to Kingston Moses-Sanchez to get the ball rolling in the season-opening Oahu Interscholastic Association cross-division game for both teams.
Joziah Anakalea fired one TD pass and Justin Uahinui delivered two scoring throws to Challen Faamatau.
“That was good for us that we were able to get all three quarterbacks in,” Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. “Bishop is our starter and he did his job. We’re in a position where we have three quarterbacks we can trust.”
Faamatau finished with 220 yards from scrimmage, including four receptions for 118 yards, and he scored three times overall.
“Our O-linemen are pretty much all fresh, in there starting for the first time, and now they’re getting used to that feeling and knowing what it’s like,” Faamatau said. “Waipahu played us tough, especially in the beginning when they were holding us (from scoring a lot).”
It took a while for the Governors (1-0 OIA Blue) to get their offense going. They only scored once in the first quarter, but the floodgates opened in the second after Farrington scored four times for a 33-0 halftime lead. Twice during that span the Govs converted Waipahu turnovers into points.
“We made too many mistakes,” first-year Marauders head coach Bryson Carvalho said. “When you do that a team like Farrington is going to take advantage. The turnovers were drive killers and took away our tempo.”
The Govs defense kept Waipahu (0-1 OIA Red) off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter, when backup quarterback Gavin Marques scored from 1 yard out.
The Marauders’ Andrew Simanu had a big night, catching seven passes from quarterback Blaise De Asis for 114 yards.
Farrington made the Marauders pay for their five turnovers. Ryota Kony, Kody Leiu, Isaiah Taumua and Tainano Gaulua recovered fumbles for the Govs, and teammate Willliam Prescott managed an interception.
Waipahu forced only one Farrington turnover, a fumble recovery by August Rodillas on a strip by Frisco Iosua.
“It was a hard-fought game and they definitely played us stronger than last year,” Okimoto said about the Marauders. “They slowed us up in the beginning and they finished strong.”
A year ago, the Governors rolled to a 35-0 win in a game that was called for safety reasons with 4:55 left in the first half.
Castle 33, Campbell 32
Jeremy McGoldrick caught four touchdown passes from Willie Ewaliko, including the winning score with 4:31 left in the game, leading the Knights past the Sabers in an Oahu Interscholastic Association cross-division game at Aloha Stadium.
Ewaliko’s extra point was the final difference for the Knights (1-1, 1-0 OIA Red), and the 17-yard touchdown pass was set up by Kalani Scanlen’s fumble recovery.
McGoldrick finished with 173 receiving yards.
Campbell (0-2, 0-1 OIA Blue) had seven turnovers, including six fumbles, two of those in the final minutes.
The Sabers had taken a 32-26 lead with 7:42 left on Darin Rolark’s 4-yard TD run.
The Knights’ Alaka‘i Ebright-Pitt’s fumble recovery on Campbell’s final possession sealed the win and Castle ran out the clock.
