Tour cancels event in China
Tragedy has touched the Champions Tour’s effort to play its inaugural event in China. The tour announced Tuesday that next month’s Pacific Links China Championship has been canceled because of the Aug. 12 explosions in the port area of Tianjin.
The tournament, played its first three years at Kapolei, was to be held at the 27 Club in Tianjin this year.
More than 100 people died and many more were injured and missing after the fire and explosions at a container storage facility. The course and area nearby were not directly affected by the explosion, but organizers felt it would be inappropriate to hold the tournament.
"Given the recent events, Pacific Links and our members feel it is time to support and grieve with the victim’s families, friends and all residents of the great city of Tianjin," Du Sha, the owner and chairman of Pacific Links International, said in a PGA Tour statement.
