A 19-year-old Tennessee college student wanted for first-degree murder in Nashville is in Honolulu police custody awaiting extradition.
U.S. marshals arrested Brandon Horton at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in connection with the shooting death of Craig Lambert, 19, in Nashville on March 30, Nashville police confirmed.
Nashville police initially believed the shooting was accidental, but reclassified it as a homicide Aug. 21.
In April, Nashville police reported they had serious doubts that Lambert was fatally wounded by a round from his own falling pistol.
Three witnesses had reported that Lambert was petting a cat in the park when a pistol he was carrying fell. They said that when Lambert grabbed for the gun, he hit the trigger, causing the weapon to discharge, Nashville police said.
However, autopsy results and other evidence cast doubt on that scenario.
Lambert was in the park with at least four other people, police said.
An investigation by homicide detectives disproved the self-inflicted shot, according to Nashville police.
Authorities began searching for a suspect who was believed to have left the area.
Horton’s extradition to Nashville will be determined at a hearing scheduled for Monday in Circuit Court.
