One of my friends brought a hammock and it was so relaxing comfortable it made me happy! The view was breathtaking, and it made me treasure the time I have left in Hawaii before returning to school in Colorado.

Finalists’ photos were featured throughout August in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and in our online photo gallery.

It wasn’t easy, but our judges picked the top three. Here they are.

Congratulations!

Michael Wong, 73, of Aiea took first place and won $500. Wong captured his three grandchildren, Violet Wong, left, 6, Deven Fujimoto, 11, and Verena Wong, 8, fishing with nets at a stream in Hauula. He used a Panasonic Lumix SZ19 to take his winning shot.

David Tanaka, 43, of Pearl City, left, took second place and won $300. Tanaka took a 25-second portrait of himself and the Milky Way while on a trip to Haleakala to view the Pleiades meteor shower. He used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

Shelbie Fujinaga, 18, of Mililani, above, took third place and won $100. She was hiking with friends on a ridge above Hawaii Kai and wanted to capture the view before returning to college in Colorado. She used an iPhone 6.
