Hawaii’s Cyd Okino and Eimi Koga both advanced from the LPGA of Japan’s First Qualifying Stage.
Okino, a graduate of Punahou and University of Washington, finished third last Friday in Fukushima, where the top 22 moved on. She had rounds of 73-72-72. Okino bogeyed two of her final three holes in Wednesday’s opening round, but got it back the next day when she finished eagle-par-birdie.
Koga tied for 14th a week earlier in Shiga, where 21 advanced. She had rounds of 72-77-73. Koga, who won a state high school championship at Moanalua, was Okino’s teammate at UW the last two years. She has transferred to the University of Hawaii for her final two.
Qualifying’s second stage is Nov. 4-6, at four sites, with the top finishers moving on to two third-stage events the end of that month. The fourth and final stage is in December.
Sister beats sister at Ka’anapali
Kirsten Ishikawa defeated younger sister Jaelin, 3 and 2, to capture the girls title Saturday at the Ka`anapali HSJGA Match Play Championship. The tournament was played at Ka`anapali’s Kai Course.
Moanalua senior Shawn Lu won the first three holes, then held off Baldwin freshman Justin Ngan in the Boys 15-18 championship, also by a 3-and-2 score. It was a replay of their 2012 final for the 13-14 division, won by Lu.
Maui High sophomore Jordan Terada won this year’s 13-14 title, beating Mid-Pacific Institute’s Davis Lee, 2-up.
Kirsten Ishikawa just graduated from Baldwin and will play for Eastern Washington this fall. Jaelin is a junior at Baldwin.
Le wins OCC women’s championship
Santa Clara sophomore Kristin Le took overall low-gross honors to win the Oahu Country Club Women’s Championship last month. Bev Grimmer was the overall low-net champion. Their names were omitted in the tournament scores that ran in the Aug. 19 Star-Advertiser.
Le, who also won in 2012, collected 74 stableford points. The Punahou graduate earned first-team All-West Coast Conference honors as a freshman in the spring. Grimmer had 76 points using her handicap.
