Sinamoni Tonga had 23 kills and 11 digs and Ying Chun Chen added 53 assists and seven aces as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team beat Simon Fraser 25-27, 26-24, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10 in the Hawaii Invitational on Thursday at the Cannon Activities Center.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Malary Reid had 13 kills and Leilani Adolpho contributed 12 for the Seasiders. Devon May had 21 kills and Tamara Nipp finished with 50 assists for Simon Fraser.

Kasey Thompson had 11 kills, Pomai Recca added 10 and Elizabeth Culpepper had nine for the Sharks. Tenika Wentworth contributed 28 assists and Carson Pyle racked up five blocks. Kaitlyn Dunaway finished with 16 kills, Symone Hayden added 15 and Nicole Bewley had 13 for the Lumberjacks, who were also playing their season opener.
Chaminade women win season opener
Lauren Uehara scored in the 76th minute as the Chaminade women’s soccer team beat Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) 1-0 in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Saint Louis School field.
It marked the Silverswords’ first victory over a mainland nonconference opponent.
Kristen Fujinaga delivered a through-ball to Uehara, who beat a defender and fired in a shot from 15 yards out.
Lauren Ishii was in goal for Chaminade in a match delayed twice by lightning.

Erika Ellis scored on a header for the Sharks in the 22nd minute. The Griffins’ Madeline Orr tied it with a goal in the 72nd. Megan Molumby scored on a rebound in the 106th to win it for Westminster.
Silverswords get $1 million donation
Chaminade athletics announced a $1 million donation from Edison Miyawaki on Wednesday night at the school’s booster kick-off event at Waialae Country Club.
The donation will go toward the construction of a new building next to McCabe Gymnasium, featuring locker rooms for home and visiting teams, an officials locker room and a training room.
Miyawaki is a part-owner of the Cincinnati Bengals.
