Alcohol restrictions at the Kaneohe sandbar and parking restrictions in Lanikai will be enforced during the Labor Day weekend.
The ban on alcohol at the sandbar, Ahu O Laka, applies only to three-day holiday weekends under rules signed into law on July 25 by Gov. David Ige.
The ban was introduced in 2012 following the death of a 26-year-old man who got into a fight at Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor.
Since that temporary safety zone rule as been in place, holiday weekends have been more “peaceful and calm,” the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a news release.
In Lanikai, the city Department of Transportation Services will enforce parking restrictions through the Labor Day weekend.
Parking will not be allowed on the right side of the road along the Lanikai loop, to alleviate heavy traffic into Lanikai and allow access for emergency vehicles, residents and visitors.
Barriers will be placed next to the bike lane on the right side of Aalapapa and Mokulua drives. Parking is also prohibited in the bike lane.
“Residents of Lanikai have confirmed that barricades on the bike lane side of the loop improve traffic congestion on busy weekends. If it takes barricades to enforce existing laws, DTS will continue to put them up until the permanent no-parking signs are installed,” city transportation Director Mike Formby said in a news release.
