Toby Sidlo of Kalaheo, Kauai, was charged $36,000 for a medevac flight to Oahu in July 2014. Doctors treating Sidlo deemed the flight necessary so he could receive lifesaving treatment. “I can’t afford to pay that,” he said of his bill. “I was in a really bad state. It was urgent.”
