Hawaii County fire crews extinguished a blaze Saturday at a former boat manufacturing plant in Waimea.
The fire at the 16,000-square-foot facility was reported at 12:19 p.m. on Kahilu Road, the Fire Department said by email.
The unoccupied building, with a tin roof and sides, was 75 percent ablaze, and flames were coming out of the windows when the first crew arrived at 12:27 p.m. Several vehicles also were on fire, the department said.
The building hadn’t been used to build boats for more than 10 years and was “known to be in poor repair,” the department said. Inside were Fiberglas supplies, boat molds and cardboard boxes. The damage was estimated at $200,000.
Maui roadwork will close lanes
The state Department of Transportation will begin work on three projects on Maui after Labor Day.
The Maui News reports that Honoapiilani Highway will be resurfaced at the Kaanapali Parkway intersection Tuesday through Friday. Drivers are warned of alternating single-lane closures of the southbound lanes between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
The second project entails construction on Old Haleakala Highway between Aalele Street and Kala Road. The work will cause lane shifts in both directions, and motorists are asked to use caution.
Finally, bridge maintenance and repairs on Waiehu Beach Road between Kuhio Place and Eha Street will close lanes in both directions from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
