Good news and better news for the Hawaii volleyball team on Monday.
The Rainbow Wahine didn’t take a hit in the AVCA Coaches Division I Top 25 poll despite losing to lower-ranked UCLA on Sunday. Hawaii (5-1) moved up a spot to No. 16, while the Bruins (4-1) jump eight places to No. 17 after winning their 10th Hawaiian Airlines Classic title.
And junior opposite Nikki Taylor continued to be a big hit with the Big West, repeating as conference player of the week. She had a tournament-high 53 kills while leading Hawaii in kills in all three matches, including 22 against Iowa on Friday. She also had two aces in each of the matches and had a double-double (16 kills-15 digs) in the loss to the Bruins.
Hawaii remains the only Big West team ranked and just one of four from a non-Power Five league.
Penn State (5-0) was a near-unanimous choice for the top spot, receiving all but one of the 64 first-place votes. Florida (4-0), which plays at the Stan Sheriff Center in this week’s Outrigger Resorts Challenge, moved up to No. 2 after wins over then-No. 11 Oregon and then-No. 3 Texas at the VERT Challenge hosted by the Longhorns.
Stanford (3-1), receiving the remaining first-place vote, dropped a spot to No. 3 after being swept at Penn State. Following the Cardinal are Texas (4-1), Nebraska (4-1) and Southern Cal (6-0).
Dropping the furthest were Kentucky (4-3), from 10th to No. 21, and preseason No. 7 North Carolina (0-5), falling from No. 18 last week out of the poll.
Defending Big West champion Long Beach State (4-2) continues to receive votes (9).
Hawaii concludes its pre-conference tournament schedule with this week’s Outrigger Resorts Challenge. The Wahine open with San Diego State (1-5) on Thursday, followed by matches against No. 2 Florida (4-0) on Friday and Eastern Washington (4-3) on Saturday.
