After scoring a perfect 10 at the Hurley Pro, Haleiwa’s Freddy Patacchia Jr. withdrew from the tournament and announced his retirement from the World Surf League on Wednesday at Trestles, Calif.
The 11-year WSL veteran said that it will probably be the last time he’ll compete on the Championship Tour, but he may decide to compete in some Qualifying Series events, according to the World Surf League.
Patacchia, ranked No. 28 on the men’s championship tour, earned the perfect score in Heat 10 against Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Australia’s Bede Durbidge. One of the remaining surfers will take his spot in Round 4 of the tournament.
Five Hawaii surfers competed in the Hurley Pro and everyone but Patacchia placed second in their respective heats. Dusty Payne scored a 13.44 to fall behind Kelly Slater in Heat 1, while Sebastian Zietz finished with 10.87 points, behind Julian Wilson in Heat 3. Keanu Asing followed up with a 14.74 behind Owen Wright in Heat 4. John John Florence posted a 12.20 in Heat 9 against Italo Ferreira and Ricardo Christie.
