Part of the Rainbow Wahine cross country team’s youth movement, freshman Camille Campos posted the program’s top time since 2012 in her college debut last Saturday.
Campos placed third in the season-opening Big Wave Invitational at Kahuku Golf Course, finishing in 18 minutes, 31.05 seconds. Her time was UH’s fastest in a 5K event since Kevyn Murphy placed second in the Santa Clara Bronco Invite at 18:03.1 on Oct. 13, 2012.
One of eight freshmen on the 14-runner roster, Campos led a pack of four UH runners in the top 10. Fellow freshman Piper McDonald came in fifth at 19:04.67 followed by sophomore Montana Martinez (19:06.09), UH’s top finisher all eight meets she competed in last year. Junior transfer Alli Cross finished eighth (19:11.02). All four came in under UH’s top time last year of 19:30 set by Martinez.
As a team, UH placed second in the meet with its five scoring runners posting 34 points, a 61-point improvement over last year’s fourth-place finish.
