Moanalua sophomore Jun Ho Won got hot on a very warm Sunday to win the Hickam Invitational last weekend. The tournament was making a comeback at Mamala Bay Golf Course after being off the schedule three years.
Won fired an 8-under-par 64 to catch and pass Na Menehune teammate Kyosuke Hara, who shot 64 Saturday.
Hara was two back of Tyler Ota going into the final round, with Won three back.
Won finished the 54-hole event at 12-under 204, two ahead of Hara, who closed with a 67. Ota — the Manoa Cup champ and a Moanalua graduate — was third at 72-209.
Dalen Yamauchi (70–211), Kyle Suppa (68-213) and Andy Okita (73) and David Saka (72), at 214, also finished under par.
Carl Ho won the senior flight by nine shots with a total of 221.
Phil Anamizu birdied the third extra hole to win Super Seniors over David Kawahara. Both finished at 232.
John Mun (78–232) captured A flight and Brian Pang (81–233) B flight.
Won also captured the 64th Francis Hyde I`i Brown Four Ball Championship in May, with Shawn Lu, a Moanalua senior.
Oliver goes to mid-amateur
Howard Oliver will represent Hawaii at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship after winning the local qualifier Tuesday at Hawaii Prince.
Oliver fired a 3-over-par 75. Chris Igawa is first alternate and Jamison Renfroe second alternate. Both shot 76 and Igawa won the playoff on the second extra hole.
This year’s Mid-Amateur Championship will be Oct. 3-8 in Florida.
Chiang runaway champion
Honolulu’s Tuan-yu Chiang ran away with the girls championship at last weekend’s third annual Hualalai Junior Classic, a Hawaii State Junior Golf Association event.
Chiang closed with 73 to finish at even-par 144 at Hualalai’s Nicklaus Course.
She won the 15-18 division by eight shots over Maui’s Jasmine Cabajar. Chiang was the only golfer in the seven divisions to finish at par or better.
The oldest boys division was won by Maui’s Justin Ngan (74–145), who finished four shots ahead of Justin Arcano and Shon Katahira.
Younger champions were Millburn Ho (76–157) and Pono Yanagi (75–150) in 13-14s; Alison Takamiya (76–149) and Isaiah Kanno (71–151) in 11-12s and Joshua Satonaka Chung (75–153) in Boys 7-10.
Hara goes unbeaten
Hawaii’s Kyosuke Hara went unbeaten at the inaugural Trans-Pacific Junior Golf Match, which concluded Aug. 28 at Topwin Golf and Country Cub in Beijing.
The format had 16 juniors from the U.S. and Mexico taking on a team from People’s Republic of China and Chinese Taipei. The U.S.-Mexico team won, 34.5-13.5.
Hara, a Moanalua senior, and Kyle Suppa, a senior at Punahou, were invited to participate.
Hara went 4-0-1 and he and Suppa both won mixed matches with Sierra Brooks, the only golfer to go 5-0.
The team also got a chance to visit the Great Wall of China.
"The most interesting story from my trip was hiking up the Great Wall of China," Suppa told the USGA. "They were probably the steepest steps that I have ever climbed in my life and they extended out for a very long time."
Keiley tied for sixth
Maui’s Justin Keiley is tied for sixth after shooting a 3-under-par 69 in Wednesday’s opening round of the Web.com Tour Pre-Qualifying event in Woodland, Calif.
Keiley, who had three twos on his card, is three back of leader Craig McCoy. Max Bonk, from Kamuela, is tied for 24th after a 71.
The top 37 and ties advance to first-stage qualifying.
