Castle & Cooke cited over leaky building

City building inspectors have issued a notice of violation to Castle & Cooke Land Co. for a leaky roof over a three-story office building in Iwilei that was evacuated because of flooding Sept. 3.

The state Department of Human Services announced Sept. 3 that the Honolulu Fire Department recommended evacuating the tenants at 801 Dillingham Blvd. and other buildings in the area because of leaking and flooding from heavy rain.

That prompted the state to temporarily close the Med-QUEST offices on the third floor, but Med-QUEST workers were able to reopen the site the following day, according to DHS.

The city violation notice was issued Wednesday, citing water damage to the walls and ceilings of the building’s second and third floors. The first floor also suffered damage to the floor and walls, according to the notice.

The city inspection of the building was prompted by a complaint that leaks and wwater damage had created unsafe conditions, according to a city spokesman. The violation notice instructs owner Castle & Cooke to make the necessary repairs within 90 days.
