After getting swept by Cal State Los Angeles for its first loss of the season on Friday, the Chaminade volleyball team returned the favor by sweeping the Golden Eagles 25-23, 25-19, 27-25 on the third and final day of the Hilo Naniloa Hawaii Challenge at Hilo.
The Silverswords, led by Keani Passi’s 12 kills, are off to their best start (7-1) since the 2007 season, which they started 8-1.
» BYU-Hawaii’s volleyball team was swept by Central Washington 25-20, 25-19, 25-13 on the final day of the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament. Leilani Adolpho led the Seasiders with a near double-double with 12 kills and nine digs.
» Elizabeth Culpepper led the way for the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team, as the Sharks swept host Seattle Pacific in their final match of the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21. Culpepper recorded a double-double with 13 digs and 17 kills.
BYUH spoils Chaminade’s opener
BYU-Hawaii routed Chaminade in men’s soccer, 4-1, in the Silverswords’ season opener on Saturday afternoon at Saint Louis field. The Seasiders were led by Jacob McRae, who recorded the first hat trick for BYUH since 2009. Ryan Arkelian scored the lone goal for the Silverswords in the 59th minute.
» The Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team lost to Simon Fraser 1-0 in Hilo on Saturday afternoon. Olivia Aguiar scored the winning goal for the Clan in the 51st minute.
PacWest teams compete in HPU meet
The Hawaii Pacific men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished second behind Alaska Anchorage during the HPU Invitational on Saturday at Kahuku Golf Course.
The Anchorage men finished with 15 points, followed by HPU (52), Brigham Young-Hawaii (83) and Chaminade (115). The Anchorage women had 16 points, followed by HPU (51), BYU-Hawaii (69), Hawaii Hilo (124) and Chaminade (136).
The top finisher from a local school in the men’s 8K race was the Sharks’ Jacob Alplund, who placed seventh in 26:57.2. The Seawolves had the top six finishers, including winner Henry Cheseto (25:58.6).
In the women’s 5K event, HPU’s Johanna Apelryd placed fifth in 19:09.8. The Seawolves had the top four finishers, including winner Caroline Kurgat (18:15.9).
Wehnelt wins twice for UH men’s tennis
The University of Hawai’i men’s tennis team resumed play at the Silverado Collegiate Invitational against the Dons of San Francisco in Napa Valley, Calif. Kai Wehnelt led the way for the Rainbow Warriors, winning two matches — one in singles, and another with doubles partner Felix Albert.
Wehnelt was the only victor for the ‘Bows, as Albert, Marcel Chan and Igor Kolorac lost their individual matches. The other doubles team of Kolaric and Chan dropped their match as well.
The ‘Bows will continue play tomorrow, taking on Pacific in the final day of the invitational.
