1. Nice Start, But …
» Situation: Hawaii 0, Ohio State 0, 14:35 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, first-and-10 at own 14.
» The Play: QB Max Wittek hits WR Dylan Collie on a crossing pattern for 29 yards.
» Impact: The opening drive quickly fizzles and Hawaii punts for the first of eight times. The first play from scrimmage turns out to be Hawaii’s longest gain of a day when it nets 165 total yards.
» Hawaii coach Norm Chow: "The numbers don’t look good. We talked about it before the game — every opportunity that we had to make a play we had to because we’re playing the No. 1 team in the country."
2. Short Field
» Situation: Ohio State 7, Hawaii 0, 7:23 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, third-and-6 at own 24.
» The Play: CB Gareon Conley intercepts Wittek’s pass and Ohio State takes over at the Hawaii 35.
» Impact: RB Ezekiel Elliott scores his second of three touchdowns on a 3-yard run. It takes Ohio State nine plays to cover 35 yards against a Hawaii defense that allowed just a 24-yard pass as the longest play against it all game.
» Elliott: "Offensively, we didn’t play good at all. We were very sloppy. After this quick turnaround we weren’t able to prepare as well as we usually do, so we just didn’t execute."
3. Sacked and Stripped
» Situation: Ohio State 14, Hawaii 0, 10:29 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, first-and-10 at own 10
» The Play: LB Darron Lee comes in untouched from the left and sacks Wittek, causing a fumble. DE Sam Hubbard recovers at the Hawaii 6.
» Impact: The Hawaii defense holds, but K Jack Willoughby makes a 20-yard field goal, giving Ohio State a three-score lead at 17-0.
» Ohio State coach Urban Meyer: "I thought (OSU’s defense) played great. They created turnovers. We scored on defense. Short field a couple times."
4. Deepest Drive
» Situation: Ohio State 17, Hawaii 0, 3:36 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth-and-3 at Ohio State 40
» The Play: Wittek keeps and runs to the right for 5 yards and a first down.
» Impact: At the OSU 35, Hawaii is the closest it will get to the end zone this game. After two incomplete passes, Wittek is sacked for a 7-yard loss and Hawaii punts.
» Wittek: "We left a lot of yards out there and even some points out there. We left a lot of good plays out there."
5. Scoop and Score
» Situation: Ohio State 24, Hawaii 0, 7:48 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball second-and-12 at own 26
» The Play: After a botched hand-off exchange, the ball is eventually picked up by S Vonn Bell who returns it 14 yards for a touchdown.
» Impact: Ohio State won the turnover battle decisively, 4-0. On a day when neither offense is performing well it is the biggest factor in the outcome.
» Bell: "All the big guys were hugging me, but they’re the reason I scored. They get ball disruption, they get to the ball … everybody’s running to the ball. … Don’t let these guys score … that’s our No. 1 objective. We go out with that goal in mind. If you want to be the best defense in the country, you’ve got to show it. We’ve got things to work on, but this is a positive we can build on."
