It sure was a roller coast ride over the weekend in the world of Hawaii sports. Saturday morning, we were greeted with the headline “UPSET! No. 16 Wahine down No. 2 Florida in 5 sets.” That was volleyball — but for many, it buoyed hopes for an upset by the UH Rainbow Warriors, too, against No. 1 football team Ohio State.
That was not to be, though considering how well Hawaii’s defense played, the Sunday headline that said “Warrior defense shines in 38-0 loss to Ohio State” actually made sense. Plus, the Rainbow Warriors beat the spread (40 points).
Finally, Saint Louis School alum Marcus Mariota played brilliantly on Sunday in his regular season debut with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 42-14, and all was right with the world again — except for all that heavy stuff about wars and terrorism and poverty and refugees overwhelming Europe and …
For a brief moment, everything was cool
The adjective “prevailing” used to come before the phrase “trade winds” whenever Hawaii’s climate was discussed. Remember those days?
The cooling trades have been declining for some time, scientists say, no more noticeably than in the past several weeks of unbearably hot, humid weather. The weather experts say elevated ocean temperatures will continue to power the humidity until late this fall.
But let’s be positive for a moment. Wasn’t that reprieve on Monday, when the trades briefly caressed the hot furrowed brows, just delicious? Enjoy it while it lasts — assuming it does.
