"Never let them see you sweat" may be a mantra for business leaders and Dry Idea deodorant, but it also applies to the fashion world, where style is about looking cool, comfortable and at ease in all that you wear.
With thermometers hitting 90 degrees so frequently this year, all one wants to do is peel off those clothes, but here are a few ways to cope with our now endless summer:
Go short
There’s a reason violent, disagreeable people are labeled hotheads. Feeling hot leads to irritability, and one of the fastest ways to cool off is to get hair off the nape of the neck.
At hair salons, stylists are being inundated with requests to "chop it all off." Or, die-hard long-hair enthusiasts are pulling it all up into a high ponytail.
Over at Hairscapes, Hawaii, Yvonne Ching said that with the recent heat wave, her hair keeps getting shorter and shorter.
"When hair sticks to the back of your neck, it’s really uncomfortable," she said. "I live in Mililani, and sitting in my garden, I swear it was 100 degrees, and it’s supposed to be one of the cooler areas of the island. When we’re hot the whole island must be steaming."
Since shedding her locks, she said she’s happy with the ease of care. "Now my hair’s short, nice and cool, and all I have to do is run my fingers through it."
"I can just wash it and go. I don’t have to worry about it, because when you’re hot, you don’t want to do anything. I don’t even want to put on makeup."
Go light
This applies to clothing that you wear and makeup. When it comes to clothing, opt for pale, heat-deflecting colors from white to baby blues and other pastels. Choose cotton or cotton blends that breathe.
Many choose to skip foundation makeup that they feel melts away in the heat. Take the plunge if you’re comfortable with your own skin. If you feel you need a little help looking flawless, a mineral sunscreen such as Eminence Organic Skincare provides SPF 30 sun protection with minerals that help to even out skin tone. It’s about $58 at spas such as Heaven on Earth or Laniwai at Aulani, or find it online at eminenceorganics.com.
For those with dry skin, mineral products can appear dry. You can wait for the humidity to set in, or add a light layer of moisture back to cheeks with a light tough of Cushion Screen Cell foundation ($44) from South Korean-based TheFACEshop, with locations at Ward Warehouse, McCully Shopping Center and Waimalu Plaza.
If you are going light on foundation, you can still show off a finished look by working on your brows. The trend is thick and straight across — K-pop style — wearing eyeliner with mascara, then going light on the lips.
With Korea’s humid subtropical summers, they know a thing or two about makeup for hot weather. One question I hear frequently is, "How can I wear eyeliner without ending up looking like a raccoon?"
The Korean eyeliners combine ease of application with long-lasting wear. At TheFACEShop, Gelset or Make Me Star pencil eyeliners (about $9 each) glide on without tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes, and stay on all day and into the night, as long as you’re not rubbing at it. If you’re not sure whether your hand is steady enough to swipe on a line, start with an angle brush and line with eye shadow that is easier to remove if it goes crooked, then trace over your line with the pencil.
Walk softly and carry a fan
In his zaftig days, uber-designer Karl Lagerfeld always carried a fan, we assumed for fashion’s sake. But the signature look was more than a stylish affectation. The fan helped him stay cool in his high-collared shirts and suits.
It’s telling that a now svelte Lagerfeld has a new signature — fingerless gloves.
Fans are abundant in Chinatown, where they sell for a few dollars and can add a dash of mystery to your look.
Body wipes
What’s good for babies now turns out to be good for adults. Baby wipes can be used to pat down overheated skin, and Ban has introduced Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths with that same idea in mind. The moist cloths cool the skin where it matters, around your forehead, neck, chest and underarms.
The cloths come in four light deodorizing scents — Restore, Invigorate, Energize and Enliven — with a silky powder finish to keep you comfortable.
Available at Walmart, Walgreens, Kmart, Target and other drugstores at less than $5 for a pack of 10 cloths.
