Missing a coach and missing players, No. 12 Hawaii didn’t really miss a beat Friday night as it dispatched undersized CSU Bakersfield 25-11, 25-14, 24-26, 25-15 in a nonconference volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Reigning AVCA national player of the week Nikki Taylor put down 20 kills — her 10th consecutive match in double digits — and the Rainbow Wahine (9-1) turned what had been a chaotic week into their fourth consecutive victory. Hawaii needed 110 minutes to put aside the distractions of associate coach Jeff Hall being put on administrative leave, sophomore hitter Megan Huff leaving the volleyball program to focus solely on basketball and flu-like symptoms keeping a number of players out of practice and a couple from playing Friday.
"If we had played slow in the first two sets then it would have showed that we were distracted," said senior middle Olivia Magill, who finished with 12 kills and was in on eight of the team’s 15 blocks. "I think it shows our maturity that we came out and played hard. But it is disappointing that we dropped that set."
Hawaii has another shot at a sweep Sunday as it closes out the nonconference season with a 5 p.m. rematch against Bakersfield (2-9). The annual alumnae match, featuring players from the 1960s through recent graduates, is at 3 p.m.
The Wahine outblocked the smaller Roadrunners 15-1 and finished with a 60-43 edge in digs, led by sophomore libero Savanah Kahakai’s career-high 23 digs. Taylor finished with her fourth double-double of the season, coming up with 11 digs.
Senior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao added 11 kills as Hawaii coach Dave Shoji stayed with his starting unit mostly out of necessity due to reserves missing practice.
"I thought we played really well for three games and we didn’t play well for one," Shoji said. "That (Set 3) was disappointing because we had some good things happening out there.
"It’s a win and we’ll take it. We got 15 blocks, but I don’t think we blocked particularly well. We had some uneven practices this week, but I thought we played really well for the most part. We just couldn’t sustain it (in Set 3)."
Hawaii had its best set of the year in Set 2, hitting .625 and siding out at an unheard of 100 percent. But the Wahine came out of the break and had one of their flattest sets of the season, going down 4-0 and never quite recovering.
The Roadrunners had their 23 minutes of fame in Set 3, taking advantage of a Wahine letdown and tooling off Hawaii’s block. Kelsey Sawyer had five of her team-high 16 kills and the ‘Runners had both of their aces in holding on.
Hawaii looked like it might pull off the sweep when it tied it at 24. But a service error by Taylor and Katie Dunbar-Lowe’s slam back off an overpass forced Set 4.
"If we had carried out what we had been doing in the first two sets in the third it would have been our best night so far," said junior setter Tayler Higgins. "It was a matter of focus. We fell apart in the third. Luckily we have another chance Sunday for that sweep."
Higgins had five of Hawaii’s nine aces.
