The University of Hawaii women’s cross country team finished in ninth place at the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday at Seattle’s Lincoln Park. Freshman Camille Campos led the Rainbow Wahine with a time of 22:14.83 for 35th place. Hawaii posted 195 points in the nine-team women’s 6K, the first race of that distance this season.
Host Washington earned first place with 17 points, followed by Washington State (88) and Nevada (93).
HPU men’s soccer routs Chaminade
The Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team racked up four goals within 15 minutes in the second half to beat Chaminade 6-1 at Atherton Field on Saturday.
HPU tallied 14 shots on goal, compared to Chaminade’s two, and six Sharks scored in the nonconference game. With the win, HPU improves to 2-2 in the preseason, while the Silverswords fall to 0-3.
>> BYU-Hawaii’s Pawel Dregan converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute to secure the Seasiders’ 2-0 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday in Laie. Junior midfielder Besser Davila scored BYUH’s first goal on a shot that nicked the crossbar and fell into the net.
Freshman goalie Mark Stanley recorded three saves for the Seasiders (2-2), including a penalty kick in the first half. The Vulcans fell to 1-3 with the loss.
BYUH, Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer tie
BYU-Hawaii’s Natalie Reynolds scored the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 68th minute as the women’s soccer team tied Hawaii Hilo 1-1 on Saturday in Laie. Reynolds finished with a game-high eight shots for the Seasiders (0-2-1).
Hawaii Hilo’s Kahri Golden scored the first goal at the 60-minute mark with a shot off the crossbar. The Vulcans remain at 1-0-2 in preseason play.
>> Hawaii Pacific’s Breanna Gaddis scored at the 57th minute mark to lead the Sharks over the Chaminade women’s soccer team 1-0 on Saturday at Atherton Field. Erika Ellis earned the assist on the goal.
The Sharks (3-2) outshot the Silverswords 26-2 and earned a 13-2 corner kick advantage in the nonconference match. Goalkeeper Lauren Ishii finished with nine saves for Chaminade (1-3).
HPU volleyball sweeps Holy Names
Outside hitter Pomai Recca finished with a match-high 12 kills as the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team swept Holy Names (Calif.) University 25-20, 25-14, 25-17 on Saturday at St. Andrew’s Priory.
HPU’s Amanda Culpepper added seven kills and Amanda Moriarty picked up 10 digs as the Sharks (7-3, 2-0 PacWest) continued their five-match winning streak. Lihau Perreira led the Hawks (1-9, 0-2 PacWest) with 10 kills in the loss.
Hawaii Hilo golfers finish eighth
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team posted a team score of 296 in Saturday’s final round to earn eighth place at the St. Martin’s Invitational in Olympia, Wash. Sophomore James Coon finished tied for fifth after shooting a three-round score of 1-over 214. The Vulcans finished with a three-round score of 889.
British Columbia clinched the St. Martin’s Invitational with a final score of 856, followed by Simon Fraser (862) and Dixie State (866).
Junior national team loses to France
The U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team, with two University of Hawaii players on its roster, fell to France 25-22, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21 in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship in Mexicali, Mexico.
The U.S. (3-4) will complete the World Championship in the 11th-place match against Iran on Sunday.
Outside hitter Kupono Fey had 10 kills and a block. Setter Jennings Franciskovic was a serving sub in two sets.
